Why does is the ps2 a lot noisier when playing cd games compared to dvd games?

Has anyone noticed this? Put in, for example, timesplitters or Quake III revolution and the ps2 spins up like a lawnmower but put in any game that is dvd format (e.g. resident evil 4) and its as quiet as a mouse...
