How do you potty train a puppy?

Hi, I've searched up online for potty training tips. it says to pick puppy up if I catch him eliminating in an improper place and take him to the designated place to finish eliminating. However, everytime I do that, she stops peeing and would NOT pee until she's in the living room again. She's established a habit of coming out of the crate and peeing on the carpet. when i take her to the designated peeing area, she just sits there. I can wait 10 minutes/every 2 hours but she just wouldnt. And as soon as she goes back into the living room, she pees again. Help please!!!!!
